JOY IN TRIAL

What about the times when motherhood is far more difficult than a simple struggle with comparison, mom-guilt, and a lack of gratitude? Can we be joyful in the midst of suffering? Can we find joy in intense and prolonged hardships? These are difficult questions, but I think the answer is yes. In trial, the joy of the Lord gives us strength to keep going. The converse is also true in that, as the Lord strengthens and sustains us through trials, we may feel joy simply to see how much He loves us. I can’t offer you a formula or a plan other than the encouragement to run to Jesus and rest in His care.

When our heavenly Father asks us to drink a bitter cup, we draw from the depths of what we know of Him: that He will never ask us to suffer a drop more than is necessary for His good purposes. He has weighed every trial in His hand and He will never ask us to bear suffering without Him. We will find reasons to give thanks, even in affliction. This sober and raw gratitude will grow the purest joy, for it will most resemble the suffering of Christ. When Jesus suffered, He welcomed His future joy into His present circumstances. This joy gave Him strength to keep going and to complete His mission. We can do that too.
