Jerusalem

“We’re clean and green, people, so let’s do it.”

Yakov Katzenelenbogen glanced through the dirty windshield of the car at Jaffa Gate and the Citadel of David just beyond. He tapped the transmit button on the ear-throat headset. “Move out, and stay in communication.”

McCarter acknowledged, and the raucous thrum of his motorbike carried over the frequency. Encizo was clear and concise, and the Israeli knew the Cuban would keep covert watch from his position near the Dome of the Rock. James maintained watch over Solomon’s Stables, the team’s objective. Manning was behind the wheel of the car.

Katz hit the door release and stepped out into the harsh sunlight. Slipping on a dark pair of sunglasses, he shouldered a canvas rucksack with an attached camera bag. He wore jeans, joggers and a khaki shirt with long sleeves that appeared out of place in the heat, but disguised the straps that attached his prosthesis to his right arm. Instead of the hook, he wore the simulation of a human hand. Inside the hand was a specially modified .22 pistol. The clothing was close enough to a tourist look that he wouldn’t get much attention as he passed through the streets of jerusalem’s Old City.

Gary Manning moved quietly behind Katz. Like the Israeli, he carried a rucksack containing the necessary equipment for the mission. The sun had already lent a coppery red undertint to his skin. He wore hiking boots, jeans and a denim shirt with the sleeves hacked off. The statement was obviously North American, and Katz could pass as his guide if asked.

As always, Katz felt the history of bloodshed, struggle and rapture that pervaded the city stretching out around him. He’d written articles on the geography and the past that had built this city, from the scholarly level to the voice of the people living on the streets, addressing the political and religious events that had given Jerusalem form and substance.

“What’s on your mind?” Manning asked.

“Remembering,” Katz answered as they walked through the citadel gate built by Suleiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century.

“Seems to be a place for it.” Manning swiveled his head as they walked through the narrow streets.

Dust swirled up from the remains of the empty moat as they crossed the bridge. An older man led a donkey bearing two chicken coops, a sack of vegetables and a little girl with a shy, snaggle-toothed grin under a mop of dark hair.

“This land,” Katz said, “has long been torn by violence. I have fought for it for years. When I was younger, I thought maybe I would see a kind of peace in my lifetime. Now, I really wonder if that is possible.”

“It won’t be as long as Hayden Thone is allowed to run free,” Manning said.

Katz led the way through the Armenian Quarter, winding through the twisting lanes and Oriental souks, and up and down the steep stairways. The air was cooler under the shadowy, covered passageways between buildings.

The Stony Man Farm cybernetic teams had turned up further information on the Bloody Wind terrorist group through the files recovered from Clay Pigeons.
