Creating Custom Numeric Formats Excel has many predefined number formats you can select and then amend, to create your own custom format if none of the predefined formats meets your needs.

Let’s say you have a column in your worksheet that you use to record a set of numbers. It could be product serial numbers, unique product IDs, or even telephone numbers. You may want the numbers to appear in a certain format regardless of how they’ve been entered.

In some applications like Microsoft Access, this would be called a format mask.

In Excel, you can create your own format for a group of cells, so that every entry is automatically formatted with your default format.

To create your own format:

Right-click any area in your selection and choose Format Cells from the pop-up menu. Alternatively, launch the Format Cells window by clicking the dialog box launcher in the Number group on the Home tab.

Under Category, select Custom .
