Chapter Five
Two days later, Dani stretched her back, bowing a bit and feeling every bit of the past forty-eight hours’ work. Gage and she had dug in to the mess in the office, then moved to his dad’s room, clearing out what had to be generations of junk and clothing. The local veterans’ group came out this morning and cleared out a majority of old books, clothes, and Christmas stuff they had stacked in the foyer. She’d gotten so used to seeing the clutter around the house. Now, it almost looked bare.
Clean, organized, maybe outdated, but bare.
“Need a break?” Gage asked from across the room. He’d been going through his dad’s closet, a double walk-in with boxes stacked from floor to ceiling. She’d taken a few and started sorting old blankets and candles, whereas it seemed Gage had come across a treasure trove of pictures and albums.
She grabbed a pillow from the bed and stuffed it behind her back, feeling immediate relief of her aching muscles. She would definitely be sore tomorrow. But in answer to Gage’s question, she looked around at the sea of junk piles surrounding them. “I’d like to be able to walk to the restroom in the middle of the night, if needed, so maybe we should keep going.”
“I’ve got an idea,” he said. “Sit tight. I’ll be right back.” Then, as if he wasn’t affected at all, Gage popped up off the floor and hurdled over the piles, then left the room.
In typical Dani-Gage fashion, they hadn’t discussed what happened with the past-regression lady. They always seemed to do this. Even as children. Being surrounded by conflict upon conflict as a child, she had a sneaking suspicion that was why she avoided those hard conversations as an adult. But she truly didn’t know why Gage always seemed to push those talks away, too.
Somehow, despite whatever the issue was, the two of them moved on from the initial saga as if nothing had happened. Not good for the long run with their relationship, probably. But it worked for over twenty-five years of friendship, so why change it now?
Gage re-entered, holding a bottle of some brandy-colored alcohol, two short glasses, and dangling two beers from his fingers. She chuckled as he winded his way through the piles toward her.
“Are you trying to get drunk? Or do you just want to drink so much we stop paying any attention to the amount of work we have ahead of us?” she asked.
He flashed her a heart-throbbing grin, then collapsed in a small spot next to her, and held out a glass.
“Can both be an answer?” He tossed a splash of dark liquid into both their glasses, then held his up in a toast. “Here’s to Robert Stan Lambert. He lived a long life, as is evident in the sheer amount of crap he collected.”
She chuckled and clinked her glass to his. “Cheers.” The alcohol went down smooth and smoky, the fine taste of rum a welcomed addition in her mouth.
