Days passed and not a word from Jameson. She knew where to find him, but she had no number to call. She had had no experience with situations like this, and she was not sure how to handle this situation. She did not want to come off as desperate, but that was exactly how she felt—panic stricken. She wondered if she would ever see him again. Every time her phone rang, she chanted inside her head, Please God, please let it be him. She paced the floor, checked her e-mail, and occasionally she would check in with work for no other reason than to see if he had left a message for her. He doesn’t even know my e-mail. Or maybe he does. He knew my address. Christ, just call already!

Anxiety began to bubble up inside her. Just when she felt she was at her breaking point, he sent her message. Ironically, it was sent via courier. Clearly, he was a creature of habit.

“I have a delivery for Miss Vivian Cantor,” the pretty young redhead at her door said.

Viv felt a tinge of jealousy as she reached out her hand to take the package, “Thank you,” she said. For a brief moment she entertained asking the redhead if she knew Jameson, and if she did, how well. But before she could begin down the humiliating road of grilling the courier, she stopped herself.

“Have a good day,” the young woman said, turning to leave immediately.

Viv shut the door and went to work on opening the envelope. It was heavier and thicker than she would have expected. Within the envelope were instructions concerning her invitation to Hawk’s Peak.

Dear Vivian,

Please be advised I will be sending a car for you no later than 7:00 pm on August 15th. Enclosed is a generous clothing allowance. It is to be used for the purchase of evening attire and any shoes or accessories you feel you may need. Festivities will extend into the early hours of the next day. I suggest you plan your affairs accordingly. Transportation will be provided for your return home. If there is something unsatisfactory about our arrangement, please contact me at once.

What is with this guy and his letter writing? she thought as she tore into the envelope then gasped in shock. Viv’s generous clothing allowance consisted of a ten-thousand-dollar bundle in hundred dollar bills. Holding the money in her hands, she shook with disbelief.

Is this real money? This can’t be real money. I can’t leave the house with this much money. Holy shit! Vivian laid it out on her kitchen table and counted each and every bill. She held several random bills up the light to see if they were counterfeit. She was no expert, but it wouldn’t hurt to check. Who has a courier drop off this kind of cash? He’s probably a drug dealer, Vivian, the voice in her head said.

Vivian, the other voice called. He gave it to you to spend. Just do it. Go buy yourself something nice.
