10.3 BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN MEDICINAL PLANTS

Plant-derived chemical is categorized according to their metabolic functions in plant into two groups; (1) primary metabolites and (2) secondary metabolites or bioactive compounds. Primary metabolites include common sugars, amino acids, proteins and photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll) that are used by plant for its own metabolism; whereas bioactive compounds consist of phenols, alkaloids, essential oils, flavonoids, tannins and so on. Bioactive compounds possess antimicrobial properties (Figure 10.1) that are used to cure disease in various ways and mechanism of action some of the bioactive compounds (Figure 10.2) were discussed below.
