Summary

Psychologists are expected to offer services that are helpful and not harmful to their clients. The foundation for doing so is to establish our competence in the form of knowledge, skills, and judgement relevant to psychological practice. The science and profession of psychology is always changing, and we are expected to keep pace with new developments. Psychologists should take steps to avoid becoming impaired and to limit harm to our clients if we become so. Services that are new to us or to the profession should be implemented thoughtfully and thoroughly. Routine use of outcome monitoring has not yet become standard practice, but is recommended to improve the helpfulness of our services. While complaints against psychologists are uncommon, the risk can be reduced by taking sufficient time for your clients to feel understood, presenting yourself honestly, being especially cautious in high-risk situations, and reducing or suspending your practice when in personal distress.
