With no idea where Calliope had escaped to, I chose to step out of the sheriff’s way for now and head to the study and the computer, as I’d planned earlier. It was apparent from Rider Huntington’s social media he thought himself a celebrity, the ridiculousness of his personal profile’s extravagance almost revolting. Parties, women, yachts, private jets, you name it, he flaunted it, always with a gorgeous and scantily clad girl on his arm. There were any number with the pouty Joslyn Connors—her own social media was a blitz of duck-lipped selfies and petulance—while Lawson’s focused more on sports, his rebuilt Mustang and a few photos with his parents, though he had enough comments, likes and shares of Joslyn’s images I knew I wasn’t off the mark in the least.

Still, no sign whatsoever of discord, at least outwardly. Which meant no proof to take to Cherise of my new and rather thin theory.

The possibility Joslyn killed Rider wouldn’t leave me, though again motive wasn’t really giving me joy. Yes, the two of them could have managed it, maybe, but so could Brin and Melanie for that fact, so just because Joslyn was an awful person didn’t mean she murdered anyone.

Too bad. Would have been nice to see Cherise trade the arrogant little brat’s sparkly bracelets for something a little more practical.

It was only by chance I stumbled on mention of Lawson being arrested, deep in Rider’s social media. There was even a photo of the young man behind bars, his so-called best friend taking a laughing selfie of the two of them, the caption and hashtags completely unrepentant and horribly uncaring.

The bro in the clink, it read. #toldyounottogetcaught #servesyouright #begmetosaveyou.

Lovely friend, that Rider Huntington.

A scan of a newspaper in Bangor for around that time had Lawson arrested for drug possession, though a further update in the criminal column mentioned he’d been released due to lack of evidence. So Rider had taken care of his friend after putting him in harm’s way? I had no doubt he hadn’t done so out of the goodness of his heart. More than likely, Rider had spent their entire lives together ensuring he had so much dirt on Lawson the young man would never be able to repay him or escape for fear of retaliation he might never recover from.

That sounded like Rider to me.

I did a quick check on Brin and Melanie, but there was nothing on the Andersons that I could find, in Bangor or otherwise, so I abandoned the search, sighing as I pushed back from the keyboard. Unable to just sit, my knees starting to jiggle in impatient energy, I stood and headed to the one place I might have been of assistance since I’d been banned from Cherise’s side.

Thalia was still asleep when I tiptoed into her room. She’d discarded Abigail’s jacket but was still dressed in her white shirt and skirt, stockings and shoes. I gently slid the clunky heels from her feet and tucked a blanket around her from the foot of the bed.
