I FOUND ALBAN AND WILLUM loitering by the latrine, their low sniggers, coupled by the way they straightened at my approach, suggesting they were up to no good.

“Good morrow.” I met their guilty expressions with a grin. Today was a good day, and nothing these scoundrels did would change that. “Are you tending to the needs of our newest resident?”

“Good morrow, brother.” Alban smirked at my approach. “We are just ensuring he is conscious.”

“Aye.” Willum shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his boots sinking into the dirt. “Good morrow, Maighstir. Wishing you well for your union today.”

“Le taing, Willum, and how is the boy?”

They both turned, gesturing toward the form sprawled out in the mud. To say Desiree’s errant friend was worse for wear was an understatement. His once yellow hair was brown from the latrine’s dirt, his body rolled to one side, and his eyes barely open.

“Clean him up!” I shook my head at the state of him. “No man can look so downtrodden today.”

“But Maighstir,” Alban grumbled. “He deserves this much.”

“Deserved,” I corrected. “Erik confirmed his sentence was carried out yesterday. There is no need for him to be covered in filth today.” I turned away as the morning breeze lifted the aroma and flung it at my nostrils. “He smells worse than the animals.”

“I am not touching him.” Willum’s brow rose at the suggestion as if he had just stepped in a mess.

“You shall do as your maighstir commands,” I reminded him. “Do not think to contradict me.”

“Aye.” His head fell at my admonishment.

“Clean him up and get him fresh attire. Erik will deal with him thereafter.”

“You!” The bedraggled form shifted in the dirt, blue eyes opening and fixing on me. “You have done this to me!”

“Quiet you!” Alban kicked him in the shin. “Speak to your maighstir with respect.”

“He is no master of me.” Charlie choked, spitting out a mouthful of mud.

“I take your friend as my wife today.” I lowered to my haunches, eyeing his forlorn face. “Even though our first encounter was you attacking her, I bear you no ill will. Without you, she would not be mine.”

“She’s not yours!” Mud creased at his brow. “She’ll never be yours.”

So, he cared for her still? That sentiment would need to be curbed if he were to remain alive.

“Your opinion is of little relevance.” I did not wish to exacerbate his woes nor get any closer until he was cleaned. “My men shall spruce you up.”

“They won’t touch me.” He scrambled back in the dirt, eyes wide and wary. “Not again!”

I nodded my head. His reticence was understandable, but cleanliness was essential today of all days. “Then you must stand and cooperate.”

Heaving, he clambered slowly to his feet. Alban and Willum braced either side of him, evidently expecting retaliation.

“How dare you?” His voice was low. “How dare you do those things to me?”

“I ordered only that which you would have done to my bride.” My chin lifted. “I bring only justice.”

“Justice?” He hollered the word.
