“Can you sense anything?” I ask Aris.

“No, I cannot,” he replies, and I note the hint of irritation in his tone. “But I will keep trying periodically. Once they lift the barrier, I’ll create a portal.”

“What if this was all an elaborate trap?” Davin asks. “We shouldn’t have let her go.”

“Seth and Rune are with her, Davin,” Poe says from his shoulder. “They will watch over her. I am certain of this.”

Davin’s concerns echo my own. I know Poe is right. The problem is that it’s hard not to worry about Kyra. I glance up at the sky and notice several dark clouds gathering overhead. “It looks like a storm is coming,” I tell them.

Lynx looks to me, his nostrils flaring. “You are right. A storm is approaching.”

I cast my gaze further down the beach, noting the many caves along the shoreline. “We can take shelter in one of those caves while we wait.”

I look to Aris. His eyes are closed in concentration. Fin extends his wing out to gently touch him. Aris’s head snaps toward his familiar. “What is it?”

Fin blinks up at him. “I know you are checking to see if Kyra and Seth have been able to lower the barrier, but you must reserve some of your strength. It taxes your body every time you use your abilities, Aris. You must allow yourself some rest. Why not check every hour instead of every five minutes?”

“Because she’s down there alone, Fin,” he snaps.

It’s rare to see Aris angry. Especially at Fin. I walk over to him and place a hand on his shoulder. His emerald eyes flash with anger as they meet mine. “Do not tell me I shouldn’t worry,” he says. “I do not want to hear it.”

Davin rests a hand on his other shoulder. “We’re all scared for her, Aris. You are not alone in this.”

With a slight clench of his jaw, he lowers his gaze. His eyes are bright with tears as he stares at his open palm. “If I were stronger maybe I could have found a way around the barrier. Maybe I could have—”

“Stop,” I murmur. “You cannot do this to yourself. You’ll go mad.”

Fin jumps up into his arms and then rests his head against Aris’s chest. “Seth is as much a part of Bryndon as the three of you are. He will guard her with his life. I am certain of this, because that is what any of you would do if you were in his place.”

Aris gently smooths his hand over Fin’s lovely blue-green and gold feathers. “I know. I just… I remember what it was like to lose her.” His breath hitches. “I don’t think I would survive it if something were to happen to Alora.”

“Her and Seth will find a way to bring down the barrier,” I tell him. “But until they do, I believe he will protect her, Aris. He is part of us. He loves her as much as we do. We have to trust in that.
