How the hell was I supposed to apologize to her for leaving her in the lurch? Fuck, I didn’t have a clue where to start. I’d never been all that good at apologies, and this was the one of the century.

Flowers seemed as good a place as any to start.

I entered the florist’s shop in town and strolled down one of the aisles, searching for anything that would suit my purposes. There were ready-made bouquets peeking out a bucket near the front, and I lifted one of them out—red roses—and took them with me to the front counter.

It was deserted.

“Hello?” I called out.

Emily, Dixie’s best friend since high school, popped up from behind the counter like a jack-in-the-box. “Hey,” she said, then narrowed her eyes. “You. What do you want? I thought you skipped town.”

“I didn’t,” I replied. “Obviously. I want to pay for these flowers.” I gestured with them.

“Those had better be for who I think they’re for.” She pursed her lips at me. “Because if they’re not for who I think they’re for, I’m going to have to kick you in the ass.”

“God forbid,” I said. “And I assume you’re talking about Dixie.”

“Duh.”

“Yes, they’re for her.”

Emily raised an eyebrow at me. “Oh yeah? So, you’re going to stick around after all? Because if you’re just doing this because you want to get laid and then you leave her again, I’ll—”

“Kick me in the ass?” I asked, and couldn’t help but smile. “No, that’s not why I’m doing this. I fucked up. I let go when I should have held on, and I’m not going to make that mistake again.”

“Wow. Never thought I’d hear those types of words from you. So much for the tough-guy act,” she said, then rang up the flowers.

I handed her the money. “Tough guys can have feelings too,” I replied and laughed at the weirdness of this conversation. In the grand scheme of things, it didn’t matter. All that counted now was getting to Dixie and making this work. Making us work.

“You’re sure about this?” Emily picked up the bouquet and brandished it at me like it was a sword and she was remotely threatening. “I’m not going to let you walk out of here if you’re not one-hundred-percent sure. I don’t want her getting her heart broken again. She was already so fucked up from that dumbass Adam, and then you came along…”

I removed the bouquet from her grip, nodding. “I get what you’re doing, and I appreciate that you’re being a good friend to Dixie, but you don’t need to worry. This is it for me. She’s it.”

A slow smile spread across Emily’s face. “My queendom for a guy like you. Sigh, what a hero. OK, good. And I think she might have some big news for you.”

“Big news?” I asked.

“You heard me right. Big exciting news.” The ring of a phone cut across our conversation, and she raised a finger. “Just a second,” she said and extracted her phone. She studied the screen then wiggled her eyebrows at it.
