CHAPTER 8
Before Maddie had a chance to talk to Suzanne, her nemesis, Claudine Claxton, walked over to the truck. A stout, forty-something woman with jet-black hair cropped short, sheâd been Maddieâs boss from hell. Until Maddie had quit and opened Brewed from the Bean with Suzanne â and Trixie.
âGuess all your customers visited my café for lunch.â She smirked.
âWe were busy,â Maddie said coolly, when Suzanne didnât reply.
âDid you close your truck again?â Claudine tsked. The whining nasal sound of her voice went straight through Maddieâs ears. âYouâll never keep your customers if you keep playing hooky.â
âWas there something you wanted, Claudine?â Maddie tried to keep her voice polite.
âJust wanted to let you know that some of your customers are mine, now.â Her eyes lit up with satisfaction.
âI donât think so, Claudine.â Suzanne finally spoke. âWhen our customers realize weâre open for lunch tomorrow, they wonât give you a second thought â or a second chance.â
âWeâll see about that.â Claudine hmphed, and turned on her heel, stalking back to her café across the town square.
âIâm sorry for our customers.â Suzanne shuddered.
âI still canât believe some people drink her coffee.â Maddie winced. âItâs truly horrible stuff.â
âAnd even your awesome barista skills couldnât save it.â Suzanne shook her head. âI honestly think that woman is deluded.â
âLetâs not even talk about her.â
They had a few more customers that afternoon, but just after three oâclock they considered closing up a little early.
âI can make some health balls now so weâll have plenty for tomorrow.â Suzanne grabbed her phone. âIâll just write a list for the grocery store.â She checked her watch. âAnd weâll even be finished by four.â
âHello, Maddie and Suzanne.â An attractive male voice with a faint Spanish accent.
âRamon,â Maddie and Suzanne murmured to each other.
âHi Ramon.â Suzanne bounced to the counter, her ponytail swishing.
âHello, Suzanne.â Ramonâs eyes crinkled at the corners. He was in his early forties, and had charcoal hair and liquid brown eyes.
âHi, Ramon.â Maddie hopped off her stool.
âHow was your first catering job?â he asked, an interested expression on his handsome face.
âYou havenât heard?â Suzanne suddenly looked troubled.
âNo.â He looked at her in inquiry. âTell me, Suzanne. What is wrong?â
Ramon was a talented masseuse, with his own salon in the corner of the town square. Suzanne raved about his massages, and the two of them were flirtatious with each other at times, but now, he looked concerned.
When Suzanne just shook her head, Maddie quietly told Ramon everything that had happened so far.
âI didnât do it, Ramon.â Suzanne looked like she was about to cry. She hardly ever cried.
âOf course you did not,â he told her. âNo one who met you could ever think you are a killer.â
âReally?â Suzanne asked hopefully.
âReally,â he confirmed, giving her a smile that in other circumstances Maddie suspected would make her friend swoon. It nearly made her swoon, and she was madly crushing on Luke!
âDetective Edgewater is investigating the case,â Maddie told Ramon.
âThat is good. He seems to be a fair man.â
âYes.â
âAnd weâre going to
