TWO HOURS LATER, I was swinging a pick with five other people, and five more were using shovels to move the dirt that us “pickers” had loosened. It was hard, backbreaking labor, and my muscles were really singing the blues, but I kept at it. By the time my shift ended an hour later, I could barely straighten out my hands. But, we had made some serious progress – three-fourths of the trench had been built. Bobby had assigned people to begin putting down the lumber, forming the Vs that would support the concrete in the trench. Once a portion of the trench was lined with lumber, a few more people began lining the trench with the black plastic. At the rate we were going, we’d be pouring concrete by lunch.

I had turned on the big TV in the main room of the cabin. Not much was coming across the satellite, but we did find an all-news channel. The bugs were now all over the world, with the exception of extreme northern countries, Australia, and New Zealand. Planes had been attacked by swarms of flying creatures, much like the ones we had encountered inside McKelvie’s, and caused most of those planes to crash. Most governments in the affected countries had gone underground to their protective bunkers, but, unless they were airtight, they were vulnerable to bug attacks. The all-new channel that I had found was also in an underground location, but they didn’t say where. I assigned the elderly couple, Lee and Bernice Adams, the task of keeping up with the reports on TV and making notes of everything that seemed relevant.

Killing the creatures was an easy thing, but the enormous numbers made it a difficult task. They kept hatching new bugs to replace the dead ones. The dead ones were food and shelter for eggs, especially the squirmers, and with their fast growth, killing a city full of them would only last a day or so.

The bugs were rapidly killing off mankind.

They had learned quickly, and began attacking military units that got close to them. The bugs were very good at ripping apart tanks and other armored equipment. I guess they had figured out that a tasty morsel could be found at the center of those large metal beasts. Or a hatchery. Either way, humans were being eliminated with an alarming regularity.

Richie took my pick, and began his shift. I told him to be damn careful, because I didn’t want to have to sew his foot back on. My sewing skills were limited.

I stiffly walked over to the cabin, and went inside. I wanted to sit down in the worst way, but I needed water. I said hello to Lee and Bernice, and headed for the kitchen area. Phyllis was doing her two hour tour with the shovel, so I helped myself to the water. At least our well was deep, clear, and clean. I drank water until I sloshed, and went back into the living room.

“Anything new?” I asked Lee.
