we talk better than we are wont. We have the nimblest fancy, a richer memory, and our dumb devil has taken leave for the time. For long hours we can continue a series of sincere, graceful, rich communications, drawn from the oldest, secretest experience so that they who sit by, of our own kinfolk and acquaintance, shall feel a lively surprize at our unusual powers.4

Emerson borrowed Ward’s portfolio and admired Michelangelo with him. They recommended books to each other. Some of the best letters Emerson ever wrote were those to Ward. He seems to have allowed Ward to get as near him as his brother Charles had been. “But who are you that wrote me this letter—and how came you to know all this? I thought you were younger. I love you very much,” Emerson wrote the twenty-one-year-old Ward.5

In early October Emerson finally met Anna Barker. Fuller had been trying to introduce the two since September of 1836. Barker was very beautiful by all accounts and she also had a gift for intimacy, a way of bestowing her “frank and generous confidence” that was irresistible. “Anna’s miracle, next to the amount of her life, seems to be the intimacy of her approach to us,” Emerson once observed.
