CHAPTER TWELVE
Maggie moaned when she stretched. She hadn't known pain could be delicious. Once Caiden had left, Maggie fell asleep before getting up to shower. The bruises on her hips ached as she swung her legs off the bed. Her breasts tingled with extra weight and her core throbbed with a need for more. She'd fallen asleep with a surprising thought. Maggie decided to stay in Firebrook for a little while longer.
She wouldn't attach herself to Caiden, but neither would she deny herself an experience. And she had the opportunity to enjoy the town she should have growing up. But that meant she had to do one thing first. Talk to Wyatt about staying longer and paying for the cabin. A few days, maybe a week, would be all she could afford.
Grabbing her clothes, she climbed down the ladder and went to the bathroom to shower. Her neck throbbed as she washed over it. The rest of her body flared, wishing Caiden had come back to her cabin.
Clean and dressed, Maggie thought of containing her hair in braids, but she hated the look of herself that way. That was the strict image Tyrone had forced on her. His prize fighter. Instead, she dried her hair and brushed it until it shone. The red waves framed her face. She felt ready to face this small corner of the world.
Her first stop was at the main office of the lodge to talk to Wyatt. She didn't find him behind the desk as she thought. He was out front, cutting a piece of wood that fell to the ground when he reached the end. The saw wound down. She wanted to get his attention, but didn't want to startle him while using power tools. Wyatt turned to her. Maggie hadn't made a sound. Caiden had mentioned increased hearing in shifters.
"Good morning, Miss Maggie. What can I do for you?" He set the saw down and leaned against the sawhorse.
"Good morning. I want to ask you about payment for the cabin. I know what you said when I arrived, but I don't need to stay anymore."
"Caiden said you were leaving."
That was the truth, but he also said he wasn't finished with her. Maggie tried to not let it bother her. She would leave, in her own time. "Yes, but not yet. I'd like to stay for a few more days. I can't accept free lodging when I'm staying of my own choice."
Wyatt narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms. Maggie kept still under his scrutiny. "I can appreciate that, but I can't charge you. It's only a few more days. I don't have anyone lining up to stay there. You have all the time you need."
"Thank you, but I don't want to take charity." She didn't want people to see what others gave her or provided for her. Maggie needed to stand independent.
Wyatt's head swung like a nod, and he grinned, pushing off the sawhorse and walking toward her. He grasped her shoulders and bent his head to look at her.
