We slipped through the trees, Oka and I, silently, working our way toward the terralingsâ village. Toward where Belladonna waited, her head full of the information I needed. I tried to still the anxiety that cut through me, reminding me that Bella was not a bad person, and that I was about to take information by force from her.
âThereâs no other way,â Oka said. âYou have to do it. You think sheâll offer the information willingly?â
Oka was not wrong, but I didnât like it. This was one of those decisions that Iâd known would come. Where others would look at what I did as something bad, and I looked at it as necessary. I steeled myself as we drew closer to the village.
âLet me go in first again.â Oka jumped from my shoulder and appeared in front of me as if out of thin air. âThen follow at a distance.â
She trotted out of the cover of the trees and bush, and down the long stretch of hard-packed earth. I watched her go a minute, her body visible even in the dark of the early evening. Pale orange was not what I would call camouflage.
She flicked her tail up and showed me her butt, and I grinned at her sass. I gave her another ten seconds and then I stepped out of the cover of the trees. Yes, my cloak was keeping me invisible, a trick Iâd learned from Raven years ago, but that didnât mean I couldnât be detected.

But for Frost, for Rylee, I would do it a thousand times over. I just hated that I knew what they would think of me, that they would believe me to be like Raven was in his youth, stirring up trouble for the sake of trouble, not seeing that what I was doing was protecting those I loved.
A tear caught me off guard, at the tip of my eyelashes. I dashed it away and hurried to catch up to Oka.
She approached the side of a massive willow tree that was far beyond what any natural willow tree would be. The top of it competed with the redwoods around us. My first thought was that it was stunning, a true beauty, and of course, that would be where Bella would set up her throne room.
Oka tucked in beside the willow tree, away from the guards, her ears swiveling.
I couldnât ask her what she was hearing or what was happening.
And a split second later, it didnât matter. A hand shot through the willow branches and clamped down on her neck and dragged her through. Her fear shot through me like an arrow straight through my heart.
âNO!â I screamed the word and lifted my hands, throwing back my cloak. The two guards startled and
