NOAH WASN’T KIDDING about putting me through my paces. I almost gave up a couple of times - especially when running - but Noah would take control briefly and do something with my magic to give me a second wind.

I was just sending enough magic to your muscles to heal them a little before continuing. You basically just did a week’s worth of workouts in one morning.

Yeah, well, it feels like it, I thought as I grabbed a towel and headed into the shower. Being outside had helped, but there was something soothing about water actually moving across my skin.

I spent longer than usual in the shower, wanting to savour every moment. I had been so scared when Noah had taken control and used my magic. It wasn’t until after he’d done it, that he’d remembered why we had been avoiding it. It was just second nature to him on a workout.

But maybe that’s what we needed. To tap into my magic without thinking over something little, to prove that I wasn’t about to lose control over any old thing.

We’d both been more confident in tapping into magic the second and third times, but neither of us were confident in the idea of going anywhere near my elemental powers, beyond the instinctual drawing on the elements that I wasn’t sure I could stop if I tried.

I got dressed slowly as I got out of the shower, my muscles still sore. But, eventually, I was done, and I grabbed my phone, only to see that I’d missed a text from Viktor.

There was an accident in one of the potion rooms. Dana wasn’t hurt, but you might want to check on her anyway. I last saw her outside the healing rooms.

I sighed with relief as I read and reread the message, making sure that I was correctly understanding that Dana was fine. At least, physically. Viktor must have thought that something was up if he felt the need to text me. Probably the only reason why he wasn’t talking to her himself was that he was busy helping the injured.

I pocketed my phone and made my way down to the healing rooms, only to pause as I got close. There were about a dozen Witches milling around, all of them with soot in their clothes and hair, looking as if they were in various levels of shock.

I was about to pull out my phone and text Dana, not seeing her anywhere, when I noticed that the side door that led outside was ajar.

I headed over to it and peered out, seeing Dana on a bench up against the wall, her knees pulled up to her chest, and tears welling in her eyes.

I gently closed the door to give us some privacy before making my way over to sit next to her.

“Viktor said there was an accident,” I said, not sure what else to say.

Dana nodded. “There was an accident in the other room. I heard a bang, and I raced over and... It was bad.
