CHAPTER 10

As with any opponent, strategy and timing were equally important. So far he’d casually bumped into Janelle at the diner, the coffee shop and the bank, where he’d persuaded her to walk with him in the small neighborhood park just behind it, claiming it helped his muscles after training. His plan to ease her into the idea of being with him was working beautifully. More or less.

At first he’d thought spending only short amounts of time together was what had him looking forward to their next meeting with restless anticipation. She was interesting, smart, funny, and didn’t take herself too seriously. But he wasn’t that stupid. He could spend all day with her, all night, and not get bored. The problem was, since he was doing so well taking his time, he couldn’t yet let her know how much he was coming to care for her. It was starting to drive him nuts.

But he must stay the course. Tonight was the first meeting they’d agreed to, no pretense or happenstance. When he’d mentioned going to watch a friend’s band, she’d seemed interested, so he’d asked if she wanted to tag along. She did. Standing outside the bar, he watched for her, up and down the block, hoping she hadn’t changed her mind.

Three girls rounded the corner, about a hundred yards away. He looked only long enough to determine they were hot, clad in tight dresses, then turned around. He wasn’t here looking for women. But the one in the middle…. He turned back.

Janelle strolled down the middle of the sidewalk, flanked by a taller blonde and a shorter brunette. They laughed and chatted in the animated way girlfriends had. His disappointment was sharp, but he shoved it ruthlessly down. So, he wouldn’t have Janelle’s attention all to himself. And so, he would be on display for the women whose recommendations could launch or stop this relationship dead in its tracks. At least she was here.

He smiled and walked the rest of the way to greet them.

“Oh, my,” the shorter one said.

Janelle giggled. “See?”

“Oh, yes,” the taller agreed.

It was apparent they’d been drinking. Though they weren’t drunk, they were relaxed and happy.

“Ladies.”

“England, this is Kate and Tiffany,” Janelle said, gesturing in turn.

“Nice to meet you,” he said, shaking their hands.

“Likewise.” Tiffany pushed a wave of blonde hair off her pretty face and took her eyes over the length of him in slow appraisal.

Kate smiled shyly, though her eyes were just as eager as her friend’s.

To his surprise, Janelle slipped her arm through his and steered him toward the club, walking through loitering patrons’ second-hand smoke and into the heavy bass thudding in their chests, harder with each step.

Inside the door, England paid the cover for them all and led them to the small table he had reserved. The band was average at best, but he’d been friends with the guitar player, Tony, for more than ten years and supported his efforts when he could.

Tony slid his hands down the guitar neck in a squealing lick and sent England a smile and nod, and a wink to the girls.
