THIRTY-EIGHT
Despite Gabbieâs incessant nagging, Bruce remained hell-bent on going along the wall with Michael and the others.
Despite his limping, his crude crutches and his hand still being a purple and scabbing mess, he refused to stay behind. Gabbie gave up trying. She knew her words fell on deaf ears. Bruce Chadwick and stubborn had always been perfect partners.
With expected resistance from some, Michael gathered a group of willing and ready T-Towners. It hadnât been easy but realisation became apparent over the previous days that without the Fosform Five, the syndrome would soon start showing its effects.
Michael, Bruce, Tinker, Robin, Krit and one of the Toms had all agreed on going. Evan and Gabbie would be in charge of T-Town once again. Alex, Seb and the other Tom would be in charge of digging. The groupâs departure caused mixed emotions within the bunker community. There was doubt and uncertainty, but they all knew above all there was necessity.
The six men gathered what weaponry, food, Fosform and supplies they could carry in backpacks then said their sombre farewells. It was early in the morning, only a little after sunrise. The breeze was light and the smoggy black clouds hung high and thin. They planned to get to the wall and walk west, hoping to come across a unit of soldiers on patrol and steal their identity. The whole mission relied on chance. It was a big gamble and the whole team knew it. There was quite a sound chance that there wasnât an outpost this far north at all. There was quite a sound chance that they were walking west for nothing.
Evan hugged his friends goodbye, reluctant to see them go. It was the second time in a month heâd had to watch Michael and Bruce leave. He wiped a tear from his cheek, blaming fatigue rather than sorrow.
Once gone, a void presented itself in the T-Town bunker. The place felt emptier than ever. The usual hum of warm conversation was missing. The laughter, the jokes and the humble comfort of family had been replaced with anxious unease. Evan needed time alone. He left the bunker and made his way up into his usual position in T-Tree overlooking the main entrance. To his surprise, he found Remy up there already seeking similar solitude. For an hour they didnât speak; they didnât need to. They sat perched above the jungle floor, listening to the noises of the forest. They listened to the birds sing. They listened to the wind through the leaves. Both of them prayed for their friendsâ safe return. If they didnât, they knew it would be the beginning of the end for all of them.
