Reunions

28th of July 1851

MY LOVE SUSAN,

There is a malaise over the camp as temperatures have risen to sweltering. I myself have been in a foul mood, no thanks to bad dreams plaguing my nights and keeping me from truly restful sleep. Reggie and Archie have started prayer sessions deep in the caves, and many from both Graves and Mr Lafferty’s companies, and even a few from Mr Kang’s have taken to attending, if only to find retreat in cooler air. I am glad to see the divergent companies finally beginning to cooperate, but now a new divide seems to be emerging between those who attend these prayer sessions and those who do not.

What is worse, several of the men began showing signs of disease after the first few of these unground masses, yet when I raised my fears to Reggie, that perhaps bad air in the caverns was the culprit, he was unconcerned. The best thing, he explained, was that the men continue to attend mass for only God could heal them. I was aghast at this suggestion! Despite his spirituality, our mutual friend has never let religion cloud his physician’s mind, and since this interaction, even more men have fallen ill! I then asked Archie to quarantine the worst of the cases, but he refused as well, either from fear of catching the disease, or else out of loyalty to Reggie. Perhaps the disease is a deep madness, and, therefore, only the sensible ones who stay out the lower caves are to be trusted.

I went to Mr Kang’s camp, where the majority of those who refrained from the prayer sessions and have remained healthy have clustered, hoping his knowledge of Eastern medicine might be employed to help the sick. However, I found Mr Thomas there instead, and he explained that Mr Kang had been imprisoned for thievery! Without my knowledge! What is happening in this camp?!
