I dried Mavis as best I could then dressed her in a set of XL scrubs that all but swallowed her slight frame. Once her modesty was restored, I dug through and found a set of XXL that were still tight across my chest and shoulders. It didn’t matter. I felt about a thousand percent better to have both of us clothed again. Scooping her up like she was still a child, I carried her out to the main treatment area of the infirmary and gently placed her in the bed next to Vance’s. I was surprised to find that neither the Brit... errrr, Israeli... nor any of his men were present.

“You okay?” I asked Vance while I pulled a thin sheet up to cover Mavis to her neck.

“Fit as a fuckin’ fiddle,” he snorted. “You?”

Mavis tended to, I dragged a chair over and sat down between the two beds, positioned so I could see her or Vance with only a slight turn of my head.

“Yeah, I’m good. Sorry about trying to kill you.”

“Good story for a cocktail party,” he said with a grin that let me off the hook. “Guy that seems to be in charge told me they’re Israeli.”

“Me, too. You believe them?”

Vance shrugged.

“So far, no reason not to. I’ve heard a couple of them talking to each other and it sure sounds like Hebrew, but...”

“Yeah,” I said with a thoughtful nod.

These guys could just as easily be Russian. There was no way to tell, and certainly no guarantee they were who they said they were just because of an overheard conversation.

“One thing, though,” Vance said quietly. “They’re worried. Something has interfered with whatever their plan is.”

Before we could continue, the Israeli entered the room. I stood as he approached, having already decided to play along with whatever he said for the time being. If someone is running a game on you, it’s easier to catch them in a mistake if their guard isn’t up.

“Thank you for helping her,” I said, extending my hand. “Helping all of us.”

He held my eyes for a moment then smiled and took my hand in a firm grip.

“Benjamin Rosenbaum. Please call me Ben.”

“John Chase, this is Mavis, and you already know Vance.”

When I gave my name I saw a flicker of recognition in his eyes. He took another look at me. Closer. Evaluating.

“Would that be General John Chase?”

His question set off some alarm bells. He must have noticed because he smiled and held up an open palm in a calming gesture.

“We still monitor communications, though not as effectively as we could at one time. You’re quite a famous person, though you’ve gone rather quiet for several years. Did you retire?”

“Something like that,” I said, not feeling like spilling all the details of my life. “Now. You told me mold was the problem. Care to elaborate?”

Ben nodded as he pulled a chair to the foot of Vance’s bed. He sat, leaned back and crossed one leg over the other at the knee.

“One of a very few living things that is naturally resistant to the virus.
