Passionate Conquest

“I'm not too late for the function, daddy, am I?” Samantha hurried towards her father, sifting through the crowd of people to where he was standing.

“Ah, you finally arrived, I thought that you weren’t going to make it. Well, the Senator already made his speech and the dinner is over. I don’t think that he will be around for the cocktail party very long. What took you so long, anyway?” Mark Bollard smiled as his only daughter as she kissed him on the cheek and then strained to look in the direction where he was looking.

“I got held up in traffic in the Bronx. I had a hunch the lead was a dead end, but I had to check it out” she said to her dad. Mark Bollard was a well-respected journalist and the owner of the New York Gossip Magazine; he understood his daughter’s desire to do anything for a story.

Samantha could not believe that she was actually so late for something that she had waited all week for. She was also a journalist at her dad’s magazine, and a very well respected one at that, and she had been longing to get a story on Senator Steve Marsh. Steve Marsh was one of the most popular politicians in the country and there was speculation that he would be running for the presidency in the next term. For Samantha, everything about his life seemed way too good to be true, and she had a feeling that he had a few skeletons in his closet; as an openly black politician, he already drew extra scrutiny from his opponents. Samantha knew that politicians were notorious for keeping secrets, but she also knew that they all eventually were exposed, especially leading up to a presidential campaign. Samantha set her jaw stubbornly; she intended to be the first one to air Steve Marsh’s dirty laundry to the rest of the world.

Not only was Senator Marsh popular as a politician, but at thirty and still single, he was also considered one of the most eligible bachelors in the country. Samantha could see why; smart, successful, and stunningly gorgeous, Steve Nash was the total package from a looks and power perspective. He was tall with short dark hair, piercing brown eyes, and he exuded a calm confidence that made Samantha’s knees week. As if his demeanor and appearance was not enough to capture the hearts of women across the world, he was also a billionaire controlling vast fields of offshore oil mines.

Samantha often found herself wondering how women could be so shallow as to chase after a man for his money and looks; despite finding Steve Nash attractive, she would never compromise her integrity by sleeping with someone she was working for a story.

Samantha had been a journalist for long enough to know that an attractive and powerful man was as fickle as anything; in love one minute, bored the next. The minute that another fine pair of legs passed by, a rich man would go chasing after them.
