I was outside the tower when it dawned on me that I had no idea where Dante or Vesper might be. No idea where their quarters were. Azazel would have been extremely useful right now.
Thinking about him brought a longing to life in my chest that was linked directly to my heart. Almost forty-eight hours had passed since Iâd heard or felt him close by. Where was he? Surely he should be here by now? I may have gone without him for years, but now that my memories were back, not knowing where he was evoked the same simmering anxiety from the past. The fear that heâd abandoned me. That he was hurt or taken from me. That he wouldnât return.
Except he always had.
Even when Iâd believed he was a dream, heâd stayed. Close by. Watching me.
I blew out a breath. Azazel could take care of himself, and if he wasnât here, then it meant he had somewhere else important he needed to be right now.
What I needed was to find someone to point me in the right direction. Maybe Talia or Ria, the brood mothers, could help.
Ria greeted me at the arch to the nursery. âAnya, have you come to see the children?â she asked. âTalia took them into the gardens for some exercise. I can take you to them if you want?â
I wanted to see the kids, but this Sector 8 key issue couldnât wait. âLater. I actually need your help right now. I need to speak to Dante or Vesper, both if possible. Can you take me to them?â
âOf course.â Ria smiled. âRemiss of Dante not to have shown you the lordsâ living quarters.â
âMother, Mother!â A tiny whirlwind of crimson curls came running up to Ria and threw his arms around her waist. âPika is being mean.â He nuzzled into her side.
Ria smoothed his curls. âWhat do we do when people are mean to us?â
The youngling looked up. âWe burn them?â
Ria sighed. âNo, sweet boy, we kill them with kindness.â
âThatâs not what Uncle Vesper says.â
âYes, well, Iâll be having words with your uncle.â
Uncle?
The boy turned his attention to me. âWho are you?â he asked.
His ember eyes bore into me and my heart slammed against my ribs. Crimson hair and ember eyes.
There was no doubt in my mind that this was Danteâs son. My suspicion was confirmed a moment later.
âWhen can I see Father?â
âDante will be along after supper, so run along and play.â
It was as if the breath had been knocked from my lungs, leaving a hollow, empty feeling. Dante and Ria had a son. They were a couple, so why had he kissed me? Why did he ask me to sleep with him?
âAnya?â Ria looked concerned. âYou look pale. Are you all right?â
I covered my tumult of emotions with a smile. âIâm fine. You and Dante have a beautiful son.â
She caught her bottom lip between her teeth. âI know as brood mothers we arenât supposed to have a favorite, but Tor has a special place in my heart.
