Chapter 13

“And why, exactly, have we kidnapped a Phoenix Police Lieutenant and tied him up in the basement?” Kyle asked Preston when he climbed up to the first story after checking to be sure Schafer was completely immobilized.

The cop had regained consciousness shortly after they’d put him in the car. Though Kyle had draped Michael’s jacket over his head, he would have been able to hear their every word, so they drove back in companionable silence. At least, everyone had remained silent except for Schafer, who thoroughly recited every criterion for capital punishment, the local laws, and every point on Arizona’s death penalty. It was very…educational, to say the least.

When they arrived, Kyle put him in the basement, while Michael wandered off to the kitchen.

Preston raised his eyes from the papers he was studying. The pale morning light broke through the storm and the half-opened shutters, coloring his face a sickly grey. More than likely though, the hangover he surely had was to blame for that, come to think of it. “We’re just borrowing him,” Preston said. “I’m not sure yet how best to use him, though I have a few ideas. But it will be handy to have him here in case we need him fast, don’t you think?”

G.E.E.K.S. Inc. never paid too much attention to law, that was true. But this was serious.

“Right, kidnapping a police officer in an unfamiliar city, while crippled and unable to figure out what the hell is going on – yep, that sounds completely sane.” Kyle looked around, not waiting for Preston’s reply. “Where’s Creepy?”

Catalina was sleeping on the big bed, but abandoned laptops were blinking without supervision.

“Sleepwalking with his tablet. I sent him to get some sleep while you were gone, but he took that damn thing with him. I heard him pacing just a few minutes ago.”

Kyle slowly lowered himself onto Creepy’s chair. A couple of coffee cups were on the table; one of them was his own, but he didn’t know which one. He took the first one within his reach and tried to relax his back. Driving with Michael went surprisingly well. He’d spent the most of the time with his eyes closed, to avoid nausea. He was also half prepared for a reasonable explanation for when Preston had demanded the head of Prince Charming, he hadn’t meant only his head, but the whole package. No need for that, either.

“Anything new happen while we were gone?” he asked Preston. Preferably, something that wouldn’t require him going out again; something that might deal with all this shit with Creepy’s hacking, money transfers, and preferably end with a bad guy in jail by night fall.

“Yes, Manny was also sleepwalking.”

Kyle sighed. Before he could formulate any thought, Creepy entered the room, quietly closing the door behind him.

“I’ve finished the checks on Campbell,” Creepy said. “Stu E. Campbell. Our head of the Art department is very – is that my coffee you’re drinking? – very, very suspicious. Illegal gambling; he is an addict. I traced the money, and it is really always about the money, to a few offshore accounts.
