The house was on a quiet block of older homes and had an attached garage. Soulless used the remote clipped to the car’s sun visor to raise and lower the garage door.

The door inside the garage opened onto a kitchen. He had no idea if the old guy lived alone, or if he would encounter someone, like the man’s wife. There could also be a dog, so Soulless had his gun ready to be used.

No dog greeted him, but it appeared obvious that a woman lived in the home. The kitchen windows had delicate lace curtains, there were pots and pans hanging from hooks, and a flowery apron was draped over the back of a chair.

Soulless went looking for the woman and found her in the living room. She was dead and had been dead for months. The urn containing her ashes was on the mantel above the fireplace, with her framed photo set beside it. The old man had been a widower. The absence of any other photos on the mantel led Soulless to believe the couple had been childless.

The rest of the home revealed the feminine touches the old woman had left behind. It seemed the old man had made no changes to the place since his wife died. Her clothes still hung in the bedroom closet and her lotions and potions were still on a shelf inside the bathroom.

Soulless found ten hundred-dollar bills in a desk drawer. They had been tucked away in an envelope marked EMERGENCY. He certainly had an emergency, thanks to his new face being known and the five-million-dollar reward hanging over his head.

There was half a roast chicken in the refrigerator, along with a pan of plain white rice and some sort of noodle dish. Soulless ignored the rice and ate the chicken along with the noodles. There was also beer in cans, which he drank while eating. After the meal, he sat quietly and considered his situation.

He was screwed. That was the situation. If he hoped to remain alive and free he would need help. A great sigh escaped him when he realized there was only one person who might help him. He had been hoping to see her after his return to Russia with Crash’s fortune in his possession. Now, he would need to ask her for her help, like a beggar.

There was an old desktop computer in the house. Soulless turned it on and saw that it required a password to use it. He looked through the desk again hoping to find something written down, then glanced over at the photo on the mantel.

Maybe he used his wife’s name as a password, Soulless thought.

The woman had been named Jennifer. He’d seen personal paperwork belonging to her that was kept inside a fireproof box in the bedroom closet. Soulless went upstairs to get the box and brought it back to the desk.

Jennifer Clayton Malone had died at the age of seventy-nine and had been born on December 10th. Soulless typed in Jennifer and was refused entry into the computer.
