Chapter Twenty-Two

“I’ll take my leave, M’lord Ryff,” I said, sighing, knowing Billy was filming from every angle possible.

“Not without a reward,” Roger said. “My family owes you for my son’s life,” he gestured. Kristen, Annabelle and Karyn came forward with two battle steeds.

“M’lord,” Bobby once more as Lord Vyss announced, “my House has little to offer, but I give you that which is most precious to me.”

Helen came forward with another “horse.”

“I don’t understand,” I replied keeping to the script.

“They will serve you, always. You both are now Cathartan Lords-By-Bond. Trust them to guard your back, Human Mage.”

“I can appreciate that, but I really can’t accept,” I said.

“Father, he’s right. For saving my brother’s life, he is owed much more,” an unscripted voice announced.

“Gwen!” Roger rasped. “What are you talking about?”

“My archers would join you on your quest, Lord Je’orj.”

“Gwen?” I muttered.

“Go to commercial, Billy! Now!” Kristen yelled.

“CUT! WE’RE OFF THE AIR!” Billy shrieked. “WHAT’S WITH SCREWING THE SCRIPT? HOW AM I TO GET ANYTHING DONE WHEN YOU PEOPLE KEEP SPEEDING THINGS UP, MODIFYING THE SCRIPT… AND WORSE?”

Gwen strode up to Kristen. “Your horses look like they can easily carry more than double, Lady Se’and.”

As everyone looked at each other another voice said, “And I’m coming, too.”

“Caitlin!” Rachel O’Banyon cried. “What do you think you’re doing? Why are you dressed like that? Put on proper clothes this instant!”

She tightened her grip on her handheld, ignoring her parents and said to Helen, “Milady, I’ll ride with you.” There was thunder and the falc dove, squawking in protest.

“No, you’re not!” Helen replied. “Caitlin, this is no game.”

Caitlin smiled, holding up a handheld, “I’ve changed the rules. My family owes more than it can repay. Gwen’s archers and I are now part of your story. You’re going to need us.”

“Caitlin,” Cassy said in her human form, standing in front of me. “You can’t come with us. You’ll just slow us down.”

“That falc, up there, in the story guided you here, its Raven, now.”

“So?”

“She’s not a prisoner of the Witch of Edous.”

“George killed the Witch, when she tried to kidnap Van at the Resort.”

“There’s a Witch of Edous waiting for you. Without me you will lose Raven, and this time will fail to free her.”

Vanessa dove and landed, shimmered, returning to human form. “Caitlin, this isn’t a movie or a game… It is life and death.”

“That’s why I did a rewrite.”

“You can’t rewrite the story,” I said. “I’m the only one who can approve it.”

“You did. At least, I did as you. Oops, sorry, hope you don’t mind. I’m a hell of a hacker, you know.”

“Caitlin, what have you done?” her father asked.

“I’ve decided to go to school. He’ll make a wonderful teacher. Gwen’s coming along with the Archery Team. So, I’ll be well protected. The Marines will escort you… home… from here.”

“You and Gwen don’t fit in with the storyline, Caitlin. It won’t work,” I said.

“Really? But I’m your House’s Mother Shaman, I was the Lady De’ohr’s only apprentice on our trip of mercy seeking to save Lord Vyss’s life.
