Chapter 22

V

ivian Nelson hadn’t changed clothes, but she had put on heels which I found interesting. She had on flats at the meeting not even an hour earlier. I noticed because one of them had a serious scuff mark on the toe. The scuff mark may have been the driving force behind the change of shoes, but I couldn’t help but wonder if the high heels were for Vince’s benefit. I forced that thought to the back of my mind. It wouldn’t do any good to let my imagination go wild, and besides, what did I really know about women and their choice of footwear?

“Tom, Jim, thanks for letting us join you,” Vince said.

“Yes, Tom, this was my idea when I heard you, Jim, were working with the police to help identify Doug’s murderer,” Viv said.

I didn’t like the way that sounded. Everyone in the group should be working with the police to help identify the killer. Yet, I knew the reality of the situation. Most of the group would go home today if they could, and very few wanted to do anything at all with the police.

“Yes, I’m Jim West.” I extended a hand. She took it. I noticed her hands were small and soft. Her finger nails covered in a clear gloss.

“Please sit down and join us,” Tom said.

“Have you ordered?” Vince asked.

“No, still trying to decide,” Tom said.

“Didn’t know you had more than one choice here.”

“Well, it’s between the bacon waffle or the waffle covered with strawberries and whipped cream,” I said.

“I’ll just have a chocolate shake,” Vivian said to Vince in a voice not much louder than a whisper.

The three of us all ordered the bacon waffle and different flavors of milk shakes. I went with chocolate chip.

“Jim, I asked Vince to bring me here so I could tell you what I’ve been thinking. Tom, you listen in, too. For the first two days, all I could think about was how terrible it was. Mostly, it was just self-pity. Of course, I felt sorry for him and our children. Our daughter has had to postpone her wedding, but mostly, I knew I was wallowing in my own self-pity.”

“I told you, that’s normal,” Vince said.

She smiled at him and put her hand over his. “It may be, but yesterday I realized I had to do something to focus my mind outward. I began to think about how this could have happened. I know,” she paused, and I thought she might tear up, “I knew Doug better than anyone. He’s been a great husband and father and very nice to people. But he has this thing about money that has become worse the last couple of years.”

“What do you mean?” Tom asked.

“He doesn’t mind spending it, don’t get me wrong, but he kept coming up with get rich quick ideas. Most of them were a touch on the shady side, and you know, it was absolutely stupid, because we didn’t need the money. The issue with Eric and Bob was a perfect example.
