Her name was Angelita and she was twenty-two years old. Three days later, Gerardo proposed to her in these terms: "I don't know what your commitments are, Angelita, but I must have you." She was unmarried, lived with her mother, and said that she had no ties. My cousin Gerardo had her that night in one of the motels on the highway to Pedrones. "I'll be honest with you. Angelita is not a very cultured person, but the hours I spent with her that night and afterwards opened a new life for me." They were happy, according to Gerardo, until one night when, after having been at the motel, he came home, went into the bedroom, turned on the lamp to undress, and saw his wife asleep in the double bed. "To see her there looking so peaceful," Gerardo said, "believing the lie I had told her, that I would be home late because I was conducting several confrontations that had turned out to be very difficult to handle, I said to myself, 'You are a villain, because the woman sleeping there peacefully before you, who gave you six children and twenty years of tranquility, who took care of you when you had the d.t.'s, is your true mate!' Boys, do you know what my decision was? To put an end to my relations with Angelita the very next day." "You did the right thing, brother," said Fernando. "Adulteries lead to nothing but misfortune." By that time, it appeared from Gerardo's narrative, his work in La Canada had been completed, and one of the factors that contributed to his decision was the half-hour he had to spend traveling from Muerdago to La Canada. "I realize she didn't deserve the money, but I didn't want her coming around to the house someday and telling my wife what went on at the motel on the road to Pedrones" 'What you should have done" advised Alfonso, "was to appear before the agent of the Public Prosecutor's Office and make a deposition: I am a judge and señorita so-and-so is trying to blackmail me/ That would have thrown such a scare into her she wouldn't have bothered you again." "I still haven't told you the worst," said Gerardo. "Angelita has a fiance now and they often come to Muerdago together.
