When she said that she was going to put me to work, I didn't actually believe that she was going to put me to work. The next thing I know, I am staring down at a twenty-pound bag of potatoes that I am now supposed to skin. “I don't think I've ever even skinned anything before.” It certainly didn’t sound pleasant.

“It isn't called skinned, Dominic. It's peeled.”

She came over close and showed me how to peel. It's not like I had never seen it done, but it was a lot different than I thought it would be. The potato felt strange in my hand and I certainly wasn't as fast as some of the people I saw doing it. It gave me a small window into what I had no idea about, and this was definitely one of those things.

I asked her a couple of times if I was doing it okay.

“Honestly Dominic, you can't really mess it up. Just do that, until you're done.”

“I thought you said we were going to talk?”

“Yes, if that's what you want to do.”

“And you don't?”

She shrugged. “I guess it just depends on what you want to talk about. It has been a long day.”

“It's only nine o'clock in the morning.”

“Now you can see how long it has been.”

“Are you going to tell me where you were?”

She shook her head and told me that she wasn't.

“No, just had to take care of something. It is just one of those days, you know?”

I actually didn't know what was going on. She was being very shady about everything and I wanted to ask her what was up. Obviously, there was something going on.

I didn't push though. It didn't seem like it was going to do me any good. She was about as tight-lipped as when she started, and for a while I just focused on the potatoes. It was strange to be doing something so menial, but it also gave me time to think. It was almost relaxing.

“You're getting pretty good at that. Have you ever done this before?”

I shook my head. “Not really. I used to make sandwiches in the dorms, but that's about it.”

“Why is it hard for me to see you in a dorm?”

“Well, the dorm was actually pretty damn spectacular. And the sandwiches were roasted lamb. It's not like we were eating peanut butter and jelly or anything.”

“They're actually pretty good, Dominic, connect. You should give them a try some time, now that you're trying to sell it.”

“Is that what you think I'm doing?”

“I have no idea what it is you're doing.”

“I thought it was pretty simple. I am trying to get to know you. Maybe have another kiss, if you’ll allow it.”

She kind of did like this spin around thing and stepped back from me.

“I don't think a kiss would do very well. Last time it made everything more complicated and messed with my head.”

“What about Jesse?”

Her head snapped back and I was almost instantaneously sorry I said anything.

I didn't want to upset her.
