There have been protests that too many dogs have died from exhaustion, sickness, or injuries during the Iditarod. Vets are on duty at every checkpoint to examine the dogs. A sick or hurt dog must be left at the checkpoint to be cared for.

In 2014, Dallas Seavey broke every Iditarod record by nearly six hours. Dallas’s total time was eight days, thirteen hours, and four minutes.

The slowest race was in 1974. The winner took twenty days and fifteen hours!

In 1985, Susan Butcher, a four-time Iditarod winner, was driving her team through a part of the trail known as Moose Alley. A moose charged them, killing two of her dogs and injuring many others. Susan had to drop out.
