All the way back the Dad shouts:

“Four hundred pounds of damage?”

And,

“What were you thinking?”

Then,

“I’ll never be able to show myself at football again. I bet Mike from the shop will tell everyone what my naughty son did!”

Dudley trots very close next to him so he doesn’t get into any more trouble. He wants to give the Dad’s hand a big lick to say sorry, but something tells him it’s not the right time.

His mind keeps churning over all the Things. The Good Things, like the newspapers, the bendy water tube, the sausage rolls. Then all the Bad Things. The shout-shout-shout and “No! No! No!” from a man with a red face.

Red Face Man had said, “I know who you are, my lad! I play football with your dad. I’m going to ring him right now!”

The Dad arrived really fast after that. And his face was even crosser.

When they get into the house, Dudley climbs onto the sofa and curls himself as small as he can be. But it doesn’t stop all the shouty crossness.

The Mum says, “How on Earth did you cost us four hundred pounds? For a couple of newspapers and a sausage roll or two?”
