Chapter Sixteen

Moscow, Russia

Showtime

“A hero is born among a hundred, a wise man is found among a thousand, but an accomplished one might not be found even among a hundred thousand men.” - Plato

D mitry walked out of his room with his head held high. Though there was no one among the scores of people in the compound who would dare mention his magnanimous breakdown just a few hours ago, he knew that they were all thinking about it. As they passed him, their eyes widened with curiosity, wondering if their leader had become unhinged. It was why he had chosen not to go to his room and terry long. They needed this show of force. They all needed to know that he had pulled himself together. Limping slightly, he made his way down the stairs with his man, Luka, closely behind, with the intention of doing a little housekeeping.

When he got to the base of the stairs, Stepan was there, head down, reading a newspaper. Stepan looked up, surprised that Dmitry had emerged so quickly, but understanding the need.

“Where to?” Stepan asked, rolling the paper and placing it under his arm.

Dmitry winked at him. “I need to go to see Anatoly. Is he down in the war room?”

“No, he’s with Renee. Do you want me to go and get him?” Stepan moved from his perched position by the stair post.

“I’ll go to him.” Dmitry looked around. In the time he had been here, he had never gone to Anatoly’s room or anyone else’s and was not sure where his son had been assigned.

“I’ll lead the way,” Stepan said, motioning down the corridor toward the left. “It’s a bit of a hike. You up for it?”

“I’m fine.” Dmitry followed beside Stepan, mulling over in silence just what to say to his oldest boy. They had parted on bad terms, and in his own opinion, it was due to his own faulty pride. He had to make amends before he left.

The guards snapped to attention as Dmitry passed. Nodding their way, speaking to each man as he passed, he finally got around to it. “How is Anya?”

Stepan cleared his throat. “She’s managing.”

“Angry?”

Stepan chuckled. “Furious.”

Dmitry assumed. He wished he had time to talk to her, but the clock was ticking. “Could you let her know that I’d like to speak with her upon my return?”

Stepan wasn’t aware that Dmitry was considering leaving the compound. News to him, he shrugged. “Of course.” He cut his eyes up toward his boss. “Anything else you’d like for me to pass on.”

“If I tell you to tell her that I’m sorry, she’ll take it as a sign of my own weakness. Better you just let her know that I want to talk to her.” He slowed down a little, feeling the strain of the stitches in his side. “But I do have one favor. I need you to order a violin bow.”

Stepan was certain it was to replace the one that Anya had surreptitiously destroyed to defy her mother.
