Instead of writingI’m flying

to see youterminalentubedpassing

through cloudsinstead of describingmy grief

I’m showing youthe man across the aisle

lurching in his seatas if

buffeted by laughteror sobbing

the steward holding himso he doesn’t beat

his face into the seatin front of himthe turbulence

finally easinghe fallsinto exhausted sleep

his breathin gaspsinstead of flying

the plane slowsnosing down

FIREFLIES

Flying homeI see you

in my dreamstrickendimmed

flusteredby firefliesyou smile

grimaceand smilesending a message

too ephemeralto graspwhat was

familiar thentheir on off

seems distant nowexotic like angels

beckoning usfrom the heavenof childhood

they cannot crossover the mountainsbut hover

in memorywhere our bodiesgleam with longing

and lovethe light blinkingat the end

of our wingour livesso briefly

plungingthrough the dark

the lightthe dark
