Animals Helping Us Heal

Animals help us heal in amazing ways, though we don’t always recognize it.

Simon, aka Simie, was an active eleven-year-old yellow Labrador retriever who lived with my parents, but my youngest brother, Kyle, had a special affinity for him and would sometimes dognap him for days and take him to his condo for “bro time.” My mother would come home to an empty house and then call all her children trying to locate her prized four-legged son.

He was a man’s dog, voraciously licking his private parts on display in the center of the den whenever my parents had a house full of guests. He would playfully jump on the lap of anyone sitting on the couch, bearing down all his weight while panting his jellyfish-scented breath in their faces. I always felt that he would have been a great fraternity house dog.

Once we were at the ocean with our female chocolate Labrador at the time, Princess. She was resting calmly on a blanket, enjoying the sun. My parents showed up with Simon, and he spotted Princess and came rushing over to her. My dad was holding Simon by the leash, but Simon pulled my dad across the sand as if he were on skis. Simon got right next to Princess’s blanket and immediately rolled his whole body in the sand and then dug a shallow hole and set himself in it, panting wildly like he had just run a long-distance race. I think he was trying to be her friend, but Princess remained unmoved and looked away from him, as though repulsed by the sandy mess he had created for himself. She ignored him the entire day and any time he tried to get close to her, she gave a little growl and he immediately stepped back.

Despite his slightly uncouth behavior, Simon’s lovable nature made him irresistible. He was all about having fun. Sometimes when my brothers played with him, he would get really excited and scrunch up his nose and grit his teeth as though he were smiling. They’d joke and say, “Oh boy, this guy’s smiling; he’s feelin’ good,” which would only excite him more. What you saw was what you got with Simon; no frills, just love and lots of goofiness. He was a sweet boy who didn’t have a mean bone in his body. I don’t think I ever once heard him growl at anyone.

My parents had acquired him accidentally. An attendant at a gas station close to their house was getting rid of his two-year-old dog because the dog was getting very big and the man could not take care of him. The man worked long hours and rented a house that lacked a fenced-in yard, so he walked the dog before and after work, but the rest of the day the dog spent in a cage. My mother’s neighbor, an avid dog lover, was always looking to help out a dog in need. She knew that my parents had lost their dog a year earlier and told my parents about the gas station attendant’s situation.
