Chapter 17

Izdahl walked with Armando to meet Syrik. Caia, who Syrik had brought to the workplace, rushed to them. With a medium-brown skin tone and large hazel eyes, she looked like Valeria had in childhood. As with most toddlers, Caia was energetic, bounding toward her uncles without a care. She suddenly stopped with her eyes wide and seemed to be struggling to move any farther. Raising her head, she shouted in frustration, turned back, and looked at her father.

“What’s going on?” Izdahl asked, as he and Armando reached Caia.

Syrik laughed. “She’s fine. Mother cast a distance spell on her. If we’re not in one of our homes, Caia won’t get more than three feet away from designated individuals.”

Izdahl chuckled. “Mother used a similar spell on you and me.” He glanced at Armando. “Remember when Syrik and I were supposed to sneak out and meet you?”

Armando laughed. “That’s right. You didn’t show up. We were eight. We’d planned to explore that big cave in the Genzi Forest.”

“Right. Mother figured out the plan and cast that spell.”

“She sure did,” Syrik said. “Izdahl and I were so mad every time we hit that invisible barrier.” He laughed with Izdahl. “I never thought I’d be happy for something similar. Caia’s a handful.” He scooped her up. “Remember what I said about just running off?”

Caia giggled. “You said not to, but I try.”

“You need to stop.” Syrik pointed at the large factory window. “And watch there. Something special will show up soon.”

Armando elbowed Syrik. “Look at the proud father, on ‘Bring Your Child To Work Day’.”

Syrik nodded sagely. “I have to show my sunshine the important work I do.”

Caia reached for Armando and he took her. He grinned as she hugged him. “But she prefers her uncle.”

Izdahl chuckled at Syrik’s mock scowl.

“How’s the roll out going?” Armando asked.

“We had to modify a few elements, to please the client, but everything’s going well. The unveiling’s about to start.”

The previous year, Izdahl had secured one of Amasi, Inc.’s most lucrative deals to produce luxury ships traveling between the three planets. He always liked seeing the reveal of the first of a new class of ships. This time, having Armando with him gave him a special thrill.

“Maybe one day we’ll travel in one of those,” Izdahl said.

Armando nodded. “It would be incredible.” He smiled at Caia, as he playfully tugged on one of her two braids. “Want to go with your uncles?”

“Yes.” Caia threw her arms in the air. “We’ll fly.”

Izdahl laughed at her excitement. “We sure will.”

***

Izdahl was meeting with his mother at his parents’ home. It was time to complete a process he’d found necessary.

“Do you have any doubts about this?” Hadil asked.

“I don’t. I won’t risk losing Armando.”

After a few moment of studying Izdahl, Hadil nodded. She waved her left hand to open a portal. Izdahl stepped through it with her, ending up in the The Ziyad Citadel, a military academy that also contained the Hall of Exalted Memories. The hall, a massive underground structure, was a Ziyad bastion of power.
