Chapter 20

I held my cell phone to my ear.

“Hey, I got your text. What do you have?” Tillerson asked.

I looked at the bodies that Colt and Skip had laid in a line. “Every lead or person of interest that we knew about dead and laid out in front of me. One of them looks like Lattore. One we’re thinking is an Eric Rossi, judging by the size of the guy. Well, that and the plates of a truck sitting here come back to him. One looks to be the guy who was piloting the boat that dropped the bodies on the dock. We’re going to have to dig into these guys and try to find out something.”

“What’s the scene look like?” Tillerson asked.

“Two dead, at the front of a vehicle. GSWs. Head shots and what look like double taps after they were down. In the building that they’re in, it would appear as if they were waiting for someone. Backs to the wall and facing the only entrance. We had those two dead there, Lattore and another guy were stuffed into the trunk of Lattore’s Lexus, and the one we figure to be Eric Rossi was found in the bed of his truck.”

“Somehow I’m not understanding that picture when I try to visualize it. Were these guys put in the trunk on scene?”

“It doesn’t appear that three of the five were killed here, no.”

“But we think that three of these guys were together for the body drop of Frost and Nance?”

“Three of the five, yeah,” I said.

“Yet Lattore and the other big guy, who we had on that boat dumping Nance and Frost, are dead in the backs of vehicles, but the guy we figured was piloting the boat is dead outside of the vehicles?” Tillerson asked.

“Correct,” I said.

Silence came from his end of the phone.

“Here’s my thinking. The two big guys, Lattore and Rossi, along with the other mystery guy, with missing digits, were killed somewhere else and brought here by these other two. Who killed those guys, we don’t know.”

“Okay. I think I understand. What about IDs on the three we don’t know?” Tillerson asked.

“We’re going to get into the pockets of the other guys here in a second. Forensics just got their pictures and saw them as found, and now we’re going to see if they have any ID on them. Worst case, we can print them on scene before they’re taken to the ME’s office.”

“Think someone knew we were after these guys, and put them away?” Tillerson asked.

It was logical, and at that point, I hadn’t put any thought into the motive for these guys meeting their ends. Yet the only way that someone could have known we were looking into the men was if they were getting inside information on the investigation. And that wasn’t something that I wanted to think about at the moment. “Could be,” I said. “We’ll have to see what shakes out.”

“Okay. Well, I may have something here. I found a file Frost put together on this investigation he and Nance were on.
