KILLIAN

Mia is late.

I pace the floor of the little wine bar I booked out for our private dinner, feeling increasingly anxious.

She promised she’d be here and hasn’t let me down since I accosted her in the dressing room of blooming dales.

Something feels off, but I don’t know what it is.

A text comes through.

On my way, got held up.

A flood of relief courses through me the moment I see her text and I take a deep breath, taking a seat at the table in the center of the room.

“Is everything alright, Mr. Callaghan?” the head waiter asks.

I nod. “Yes, my date is just running a bit behind.”

He smiles. “Shall I get you a drink while you wait? Maybe a few appetizers?”

“Sure, I’ll have a beer, thanks.” I loosen the tie around my neck, questioning why I even wore a suit tonight.

It’s habit, wearing a suit and ensuring I look that part as my brother’s right-hand man all the time. I find suits stuffy and irritating, though.

The waiter returns with a pint of beer and a few appetizers, but I can’t actually think about eating, not until Mia is here.

Instead, I take a long swig of my drink and wait, staring at the door.

After another five minutes, which feels more like fifty, she comes rushing through the door, her cheeks a little red as if she’s been running.

“Sorry I’m late.”

I shake my head. “I was going out of my mind, baby girl.” I stand and approach her, grabbing her hips and pulling her toward me. “I’ll have to punish you later for your tardiness.”

A shudder races through her, and I can’t help but smirk at how easily I affect her.

“I had a good reason, unfortunately.” Her tone sounds broken.

“What is it?”

Her throat bobs. “So much has happened since I saw you a week ago.”

“Such as?”

“My father is in the hospital in a coma. He has cancer.”

The heartbroken look in her eyes makes my chest ache. All I want to do is pick up the pieces and put them back together. “I’m sorry, Mia.”

“He’ll fight it. I know he will.” Her chestnut eyes turn determined. “But that’s not all.” She fidgets with her hair and doesn’t look me in the eye. “Alejandro visited today, and I told him I didn’t want to marry him.”

I clench my fist by my side at the thought of her even being in the same room as that snake. He’s been after her for years. “What happened?” I ask, unable to keep the rage out of my voice.

“Massimo returned home, and he told me he’s moving the wedding forward because he doesn’t want me getting cold feet.” Tears fill her eyes, but they don’t fall. “What are we going to do?”

“When is the wedding?” I ask.

“Two weeks,” she replies.

Fuck. It makes the challenge ahead of us far more difficult, but I hate the way she’s looking at me. Mia wants me to sort this out for her, and I’ll be damned if I let her down. I cup her cheeks in my hands and look her in the eye.
