With his lunch tucked under his arm and his hood pulled over his ears, Dimple rushed inside to his classroom, where his friends were all chatting about the trip.

“There you are, Dimple!” said Mr Tick. “Sit down, everyone, and listen.”

The teacher waited for the class to hush.

“Little gnomes and elves! I know you’ve all been looking forward to today’s trip, but I’m afraid I have bad news.”

Outside, thunder boomed and rain pelted the windows.

“Sadly, the bad weather means the Dragonfly Derby isn’t going to happen today …”

“AWWWWWWWWW!” said all the gnomes and elves at once.

“I’m sorry,” Mr Tick said, “but rain like this could hurt the dragonflies’ wings. The derby will still go ahead – but not today.”

Dimple’s cheeks burned. He felt the hot Boo wriggle in his pocket.
