While doing ALM, an application or product generally goes through broad phases of conceptualization, build, test, deploy, monitor, and fix. ALM needs to be followed through many iterative cycles, sometimes also referred to as the DevOps life cycle. While going through these phases, it becomes clear that there is a need to separate the production instance from the dev/test instance, so as to keep the application and data from getting corrupted.
