9.3 Single-Carrier 400 G PM-256QAM Signal Transmission Experiment
Figure 9.4 illustrates the 34 Gbaud PM-256QAM signal wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) experiment. Each wavelength can transmit 4 user channels, each channel rate 104.79 Gbps, with 30% coding overhead, 25% for SD-FEC coding, 5% for probability coding, and information entropy of 7.64 bits/symbol. In Fig. 9.4, Tx includes an external cavity laser (ECL1) with a working wavelength of 1550.3 nm and a linewidth of 400 Hz, an orthogonal polarization multiplexing optical modulator (PMQ) with a bandwidth of 23 GHz, an integrated four-channel 32-GBd linear drive, a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with a sampling rate of 87.04 GSa/s and 20 GHz analog bandwidth, and four 30-GHz balance transformer (Balun) for differential single-ended output and to suppress the clock leakage. The same transmitter assembly is used to simultaneously modulate the seven-channel 100-KHz external cavity laser (ECL) to form a single-carrier 400 G channel with an eight-channel 100 GHz interval, coupled to a single signal by an optical coupler (OC). The transmission link includes an 18 dB loss 80-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), a 23 dBm booster, a tunable optical attenuator (VOA), a 23 dBm amplifier, and a tunable optical filter for channel selection. The receiver (Rx) section includes an EDFA amplifier, an integrated coherent receiver (ICR), a 40-GHz balanced photodetector, and an ADC with a sampling rate of 160 GSa/s and a digital bandwidth of 19. 28 GHz. An external cavity laser (ECL2) with a working wavelength of 1550 nm acts as a local oscillator (LO).
