Sports camcorders, such as this “hatcam” designed by PBS to collect live footage in 2012, use a Go-Pro camera and a shotgun microphone mounted on a helmet.

The First Helmet Cam

In the 2010s, sports camcorders made by GoPro or Sony were made to be mounted on the helmets of cyclists, skiers, football players, and other athletes. These cameras, batteries included, weighed only 3.3 ounces (94g), less than the average smartphone. The first cyclist to use a helmet camcorder had to contend with much more weight.

One of the earliest helmet cams was invented in 1987 by cyclist Mark Schulze, who mounted a color video camera to a motorcycle helmet. During this era, the camera had to be hard-wired to a separate VHS portable video recorder, which was nearly the size of a microwave oven. Schulze carried the recorder in a backpack along with a heavy lead-acid battery. With all this bulky equipment, the first helmet cam weighed more than 20 pounds (9kg). Despite the heavy equipment, Schulze used his helmet cam to film The Great Mountain Biking Video, which can still be seen on YouTube.
