Chapter Five
The following morning in pre-teen church, I didnât say a word to my friends, and they ignored me back. Todayâs topic was from Luke 7:36â50, and Sister Jackson talked about a sinful woman with an alabaster box, which she explained was a box designed to hold perfume, which she poured at Jesusâ feet. Jesus had mercy on the woman because of her sins, but others who were present judged Jesus for associating with a woman with such a sinful past. I know it might sound crazy, but I felt like that was how Cierra was treating me when it came to Geneva. Sure, she could be rather loud and obnoxious, but I still found Geneva cool. It hurt that Cierra was willing to shun Geneva because she was different and to shun me for wanting to be her friend. I mean wasnât Dulce different too? She was an entirely different race, but Cierra didnât treat her like she treated Geneva.
Cierra raised her hand. âSo, Jesus was forgiving of this sinful woman. Is he just as forgiving of gay people?â
Sister Jackson blinked in surprise at Cierraâs question, but before she could answer, this boy named Jermaine laughed and spoke up. âCierra, are you gay or something?â
Cierra shook her head. âNo, not me.â She looked over at me.
All eyes in the room followed her stare, and I felt like a bullâs-eye was in the middle of my forehead. I could hear Sister Jackson chastising Jermaine for his rude interruption and comment, but I was so mad Cierra would sit here and try to make it seem like I was gay for wanting to be friends with Geneva. So, this was how she was getting back at me? I couldnât believe she would do something so dirty.
âGod loves us all, but He hates sin. Just because a person is gay doesnât mean God doesnât love them. But Cierra, that isnât an area of discussion Iâm comfortable with going into right now,â Sister Jackson said and changed the subject back to the original topic of discussion.
As soon as church dismissed, I let Cierra have it.
âSo, youâre calling me gay just because I like Geneva better than I like you these days? See, itâs stuff like this that makes me not want to be friends with you at all anymore, much less a stepsister.â
Ahmani and Londyn looked on, their eyes wide. Cierra pulled me by the arm and led me to a more private area, and Ahmani and Londyn followed.
âI wanted to tell you this last night, but since you were acting all childish and didnât come to the sleepover, I didnât get a chance. I saw Geneva sliding a note into the vent of your locker after school on Friday. Ahmani told me about those secret love letters youâve been getting. Kacee, I think theyâre from Geneva. I think sheâs the one whoâs gay,â Cierra said.
I had to bite down on my lip to keep from cracking up laughing. âWhat? Are you crazy?â
âLook, Jade and DâAshley told me a lot of girls on the basketball team at their school are lesbians.
