Chapter 11

We crept slowly toward the entrance to Queen Slither’s lair, except when we had to cover a large stretch of open ground. In that case, we sprinted between rock outcroppings, keeping low to the ground. A few times, when the distance was too far, we teleported.

Although we knew Queen Slither was not outside – we would have seen her, I was sure, given how the villager had described her to us – we were worried she might have underlings or even children who were smaller and could remain hidden.

When we were about halfway from where we had started to the entrance of the dragon’s lair, we heard a voice behind us. “What are you four up to?”

I turned, and without looking, slashed my dark steel sword toward where I heard the voice. Before my sword made contact, I managed to stop my swing because I had seen the source of the voice: A villager. This time, it was a woman in her early twenties. Like the other villager, she was greasy and grimy, and her stained robe had been repeatedly patched.

Her eyes went wide as she stared at the sword, which had stopped the width of a blade of grass from her neck.

“I’m sorry,” she whimpered. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

I pulled my sword away from her neck and then lowered it. “You’re lucky you didn’t poof. Don’t you know you shouldn’t sneak up on people?”

She nodded. “What are you doing anyway? Don’t you know that Queen Slither lives in there?”

“We need something she has in her hoard.”

The villager gasped. “Are you insane?!? If you try to take something from her hoard, she’ll make you poof for sure.” The villager was trembling now.

Emma nodded. “We heard. Another villager mentioned something like that a little while ago.”

Tina looked at the villager suspiciously. “What exactly are you doing here? I thought all you villagers were afraid of Queen Slither?”

The villager looked stricken with fear. “Oh, we are. That’s why when I heard you walking above me I came to the surface to warn you.”

“You’ve got a village down there?” I asked.

“We do.”

“Any chance you can get us inside Queen Slither’s lair from there?” I asked.

The villager’s eyes darted side to side. I knew the answer was yes, but she was just deciding if she was going to let us come with her. After she thought about it for a few seconds, she nodded reluctantly. “There is an entrance. It won’t get you into her hoard chamber, but it will get you into the main part of her lair, near the hoard. In the past, people from my village would sneak in to try to steal useful items, but no one ever goes there anymore. Too many have died. But we can ask the mayor of my village if you can use it.”

I looked at the rest of my squad. “What do you think?”

“Might be a waste of time,” Tina said. “If the mayor refuses to let us use it, we’d be better off going in right now.
