Zombie Love

Every morning, I have to remind myself that Gina is my wife and I can’t feed on her. Wouldn’t I love to, though. Those fleshy arms and thighs—even now—and the plump cheeks. What a meal she would make.

But I restrain myself because I still can. A small part of my brain still functions as human. I can reason and figure out some things. Gina can’t, though. I have to stand by and watch her devour the few hapless uninfected humans we come across in our travels, as well as the weaker zombies. She’s a good hunter. Even when we were part of a pack, Gina always smelled out prey before anyone else. We’re alone now, just the two of us. I drove the others away. It was easy. With the little reasoning power I have left, I’m a natural leader, and let’s face it: zombies are easily distracted.

So each morning, we start off, plodding along, on an endless journey. I laugh sometimes at the irony of it. Back in the pre-zombie world, social workers and twelve-step program sponsors used to say things like “One day at a time,” “Just put one foot in front of the other,” and “Live in the moment.” Hah. Little did they know, they were training us to be zombies.
