B ack at the research facility Davon decided to invest i gate the wet room, one of the few rooms he had yet to fully explore. As expected the wet room turned out to be a toilet / shower / utility room combo. The door opened into a small wash area with basins, wall mirrors and an i n dustrial hose unit.

For containing those pesky chemical spills, no doubt ...

Wedged into the corner, almost as if it were an a f terthought, was a washing machine and clothes dryer. Beyond the little wash room was another, slightly la r ger room. There were no urinals. Instead, against one wall was a row of four enclosed toilet cubicles. For his own peace of mind more than anything else he checked each in turn, even flushing the chains to ensure there were no blockages in the pipes. Against the opposite wall two power shower units were positioned.

It suddenly occurred to Davon that he had been resident in the facility for over twelve hours and hadn’t yet used the bathroom. “That situation should be rect i fied,” he said to himself, his voice sounding strange as it reverberated around the white tiled walls. “And you may as well take a shower while you’re at it, you filthy animal.”

A hot shower was one of life’s simple luxuries. As the cleansing water cascaded over his body Davon’s mind was filled with happy thoughts. Childhood mem o ries from when both his parents were alive, the frien d ships he formed in the Rifles. Sometimes, in m o ments of quiet reflection bordering on guilty pleasure, Davon thought of himself as a kind of super-hero. The main protagonist of his own long-running comic book to rival Spiderman or Superman, or maybe even the star of a big-budget Hollywood movie adaptation. Who was it that said, “All the world is a stage. And all the men and women merely players ...”

Shakespeare?

Everyone was the star of their own life story. What kind of story it turns out to be is up to the individual. Some people’s life stories, whether through circu m stance or some twisted design, are full of loss and tra g edy. Poverty, unrequited love and premature death. Other life stories were sad, mellow, and full of lonel i ness and yearning. A whole life wasted wishing it were being lived out in some other time, some other place.

Some people though, some people turned their lives into something positive. They overcome the epic tra g edy that befalls each of us sooner or later and go on to find joy and happiness, some justification for living. Though in essence victims of circumstance, each pe r son had the power to change their life, jettison the neg a tives and embrace the positives. It was a matter of pe r sonal choice. Those who chose to wallow in misery and self-pity did so by their own prerogative.

As the star of his life movie, Davon traveled the world restoring peace and order amidst the chaos.
