CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
Mai caught them at the ninth floor landing and explained everything she’d learned.
Drake had paused by the double windows that overlooked Wilshire Boulevard. The civilians had all continued to descend further with Bryant and whatever security guys and mercs he had left. Drake listened now as Mai explained what she’d learned from Capri. At the same time he tried to identify exactly who had arrived in the street below.
It was a mess down there: cop cars and fire engines, SWAT vans and countless others all washed in lurid, flashing color. The buildings opposite glowed with the burnished reflection of the fiery Junction One building.
Further up in the sky, framed by the night’s black vault, news helicopters hovered above the buildings, beaming the entire incident into people’s living rooms and more than likely into the living room of the nightmare brain that had planned all this.
Drake nodded at Mai. “I expected it was the Devil. Not many could pull something like this off.”
“Bryant must have seriously pissed him off,” Dahl said. “Maybe we treated him a little shoddily for someone that upset the Devil.”
“He’s still a knob,” Alicia said. “And a perv. That’s a given. But he’s helped us out and offered us a job. And the Devil hates him. I guess he just earned some major slack.”
“And what does that mean in Alicia-speak?” Kenzie asked, leaning on the blood-smeared sword at her side.
“I guess his balls are safe for a little longer.”
Drake shuddered involuntarily. “I’d hate to be on your wrong side.”
“What makes you think you aren’t, soldier boy?”
Drake thought back to their earlier conversations where he’d intimated that they might have to split up. More than that, he’d suggested it. And, despite all their reactions, he thought that the entire team knew that he was right—even Alicia. The facts were plain and simple, and stacked against them. Without real backing they were walking targets waiting to get hit.
Now, alone, Drake didn’t mind that so much, but he wasn’t going to get his team killed. He opened his mouth to speak and then snapped it shut again. They didn’t have time for a debate right now.
“There were seven,” Hayden said. “We killed three to my count. That severely limits their options. Also, we’re in front now and mostly fire-free. If we keep moving.”
“Fire-free?” Alicia repeated. “I like that.”
Cam and Shaw were already chomping at the bit, poised at the top of the next flight of stairs down. Still, Drake could hear no pursuit from above. Could they be using the other stairwell?
At this point, anything was possible.
“There’s an SAS guy,” he said. “And a Japanese fighter. Some crazy guy called Stein and the bald-headed dude Hayden fought.”
“Matteus,” Hayden confirmed.
“Gucci T-shirt,” Kenzie said and Alicia nodded.
“I don’t know about that.” Drake hadn’t checked out his chest. “But it seemed that this Matteus was their leader. Let’s make him our number one target next time.”
“Hopefully, there won’t be a next time.” Hayden turned toward the stairs. “Come on, we should get moving.
