As the tech left, Max collapsed on the living room sofa, mentally cursing himself. He’d gotten carried away, caught up in the moment. That couldn’t happen again, and definitely not during a case.

Julia Alvarez was way out of his league, and besides, her father—one of the most powerful men in the state—hated him. He wouldn’t want Julia to have to contend with his mess of a family, that was for sure. She’d grown up privileged, certainly, with all the money Frank Alvarez had amassed with his construction company. And she was a hell of a lot smarter than Max.

He ruthlessly pushed those thoughts aside. What business did he have thinking about this woman?

His cell phone rang. It was the precinct, notifying him that they’d located Miguel Alvarez and had him under watch. Units were watching Julia’s parents’ and her sister Rita’s houses as well. Frank Alvarez’s home had a state-of-the-art security system that would also deter intruders. Max ended the call in relief. A knock on the door announced a patrolman, bringing back Julia’s cell phone.

Max then booted up his computer and began to work, trying to purge his mind, but Julia’s big brown eyes and the feel of her breasts against his chest taunted him. Twenty minutes later he gave up, bleary-eyed and still aroused.

Maybe a cold shower would do the trick. He headed to the guest bathroom.
