Chapter 11

Fiftymile Creek was a remote, picturesque slickrock canyon. Seldom visited, the canyon offered solitude and scenic views. Originally named Soda Gulch, the canyon boasted soaring varnished canyon walls, some as much as five-hundred feet high, twisting narrow passages, and a stream that hosted an active population of beaver. It would have made for an enjoyable trip for Maddock and Spenser if were it not for the thorny issue of the Dominion being hot on their trail.

To Maddock’s chagrin, Segar and Gold had joined them in the search. The pair were already trying to insinuate themselves into the production. The lone positive was the two kept busy arguing with one another, giving the others room to operate.

“I ought to take the lead,” Segar said. “If we run into trouble, we need someone who can handle himself at the forefront.”

“Don’t forget to wash your hands after you handle yourself, Seagull,” Terry Gold jibed.

“You are a crass, vulgar man, Terry Nugget,” Segar replied. “You would never make it in my dojo.”

“I wouldn’t make it to your dojo in the first place. I let my rifle do the talking.”

“Then why is your mouth moving?” Segar said.

Platt rounded on his father and Segar. “You two either take your argument somewhere else or shut up so we can get some work done. Time is money.”

“Did you know I actually coined that phrase? Segar said. “A Texas oil baron gave me a Rolex to thank me for driving a drug cartel off his land.”

“All by yourself?” Bones smirked at the aging actor.

“It was easy,” Gold said. “He played one of his films on a big screen. The entire county cleared out.”

“Dad!” Platt warned.

Gold and Segar lapsed into a tense silence. They continued to side-eye one another as the group wound its way through the canyon. The clues Croslin shared with Brigham Young included a mention of specific pictographs, and the Fiftymile Creek area was flush with them. For the better part of three hours, they wound their way through narrow, twisting gulches, searching for pictographs. They found plenty, but none matched the description of what they were looking for.

“Let’s take a break,” Platt finally said. “We’ve got enough footage of random pictographs. No point filming more until we find an actual clue to the treasure.”

“I say we get off the beaten path, or at least what passes for one out here,” Bones said.

“What do you suggest?” Spenser asked.

“Maddock and I can do some climbing, scout out the ledges, overhangs, and caves up high. If we find something, you can join us. No point in all of you following us up and down steep cliffs unless there’s actually something up there to see.”

“Works for me,” Dakota said. “I could use a nap.”

“I’m coming with you,” Segar said. “There might be hostiles here and you’ll need protection.”

“They were Navy SEALS, Seagull,” Gold said.

“Yes, but they aren’t me.”

“Let him come.” Maddock turned to Segar. “But it’s on you if you can’t keep up. We won’t slow down for you.” He doubted the actor would make it up the first cliff they tried.
