EGYPT’S NEW CITIES

Cities in developing countries such as Egypt are a massive drain on resources too. Since the 1970s the government has been building new cities in the desert, such as El-Sadat and El-Obour. The new cities were intended to encourage people to leave their old overcrowded communities. But there aren’t enough jobs. People are forced to drive to the old cities to work each day, creating heavy traffic and misery for commuters. Empty spaces in the new cities are planted with lawns or golf courses, which have to be watered. A great deal of energy is used to treat and pump water so it is safe to drink. Desert cities like these are not sustainable. But it doesn’t have to be like this.
