CHAPTER 11

CAMILA

"Taste this." You have to try it first. The rest will pale in comparison.” Nora, my future mother-in-law, passes me a small plate of chocolate cake, humming with satisfaction as she finishes her bite.

“Oh, my Lord, that's my favorite too.” Nadia licks her fork, savoring her bite before moving on to the strawberry.

"I've never really liked chocolate cake," I confess, taking the sample, convinced I'll hate it until the first bite makes me repent. It’s the cake of my dreams. When I open my eyes, Nora's smile is inches from my face.

“It’s delicious, isn’t it?” She bounces with enthusiasm. “What’s your favorite color? We can make the fondant in any color; each layer can be flavored differently.

I shake my head and devour the rest of my sample. “No, if you give people a choice, most will choose chocolate. How could they not? Keep it simple." I think about Diego. It may be a sham wedding, but he's the groom. He deserves to enjoy the cake as much as I do.

“Does Diego like chocolate?” I ask, outwardly cringing as the baker gives me a worried look. It’s such a simple thing to know about the man I’m marrying, but I have no clue about his likes and dislikes.

Nora nods, squeezing my hand, and instructs the bakery staff to bring the forms. "He said to make sure you got what you wanted. And yes, he loves chocolate. But are you sure this is the one you want? It's your wedding day, so you have the final say."

Where was this woman when I shopped for my wedding dress?

Feeling liberated, I give the baker extra instructions for the cake. “No fondant. It dries out the cake. Can we do a pink buttercream instead, with black trim and a decorative snake slithering down the layers?”

Nadia slaps her forehead and whines with regret. “Why the hell didn’t I think of that when I married Dante? That’s going to look epic.”

“My mother will lose her mind when she sees it, but it came to me when I saw Diego’s tattoo in Mexico. Are you sure it won’t look tacky?” I clasp my hands and hold them against my chest, determined to get it but still seeking approval.

Nora gives me a chef’s kiss. “It’ll look perfect.” She hooks my elbow with hers and leads me to the front of the shop. “Now, let's go to Fifth Avenue. I have Diego’s credit card and his verbal consent to go crazy.”
